Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Remind.com is a 100% free communication/announcement service. It is ad-free and there is no payment necessary to upgrade to a premium account. You get access to all of the site for free. On Remind, you sign up for an account and you can create classes. These classes could be used for communication between teachers and students/parents, coaches and players/parents, or virtually any club or group in which text updates could be helpful. Each class can have multiple class owners in charge of adding or deleting members of the group. Class members sign up through a class code that they text to a special number that starts the interaction between the class owner and the members phone. After they enter their name it appears on the class owners Remind page. Now the class member will be able to receive announcements and messages. All phone numbers are kept confidential. The remind app is available on the web platform and through the Remind app. Class owners can send messages up to 200 characters, with images, links and files. The Remind web program was specifically made with teachers and students in mind. The class owners have full access to add and kick members. Class owners can communicate to the group with announcements or send updates to specific members individually. Remind is appropriate for school, sports teams, community organizations, clubs, and any other organized groups that could benefit from direct, up to the minute communication.

Educational Uses of Site

Remind could be used by teachers to update students on homework, upcoming projects, due dates, and reminders to bring things in. Remind could be used by teachers to also send parents announcements on upcoming events and even what is going on in the classroom with their child. Teachers can also message parents individually to communicate with them through text without the teacher having to share their cell phone number. Coaches could use Remind to communicate with players and parents to update them on scores, practices, and fundraising. You are only limited by the message size. It can't be more than 200 characters. Other than that, how you would like to use Remind is up to you.

Review of Site

Remind is a very useful tool for me when it comes to communicating with my students, parents, and players. The amount of homework that has been completed has greatly increased since using Remind. Students, especially my 6th graders, still need a reminder to bring things in on time. The addition of the app makes it even easier to update my class or team. I can do it anywhere I have data access. I also like that my phone number is not put out for all to see. No teacher wants to ever give out any personal information or numbers. All communication comes from "dummy" phone numbers. Even though these numbers are used students can still text me directly through the app. I like that you can communicate on the group and individual level. I actually use Remind to communicate the weight room opening and closing times. This has led to increased attendance and involvement. It is even nice to use the service to communicate something positive and encouraging once in a while. I often send inspirational quotes or pictures. I will be using the Remind app in as many ways a possible. It has had a huge positive impact on my class and team.
